China Mountain Zhang
A 1992 Slice of Life Science Fiction Alternate History novel by Maureen F. McHugh set in a future world dominated by Communist China. The book is made up of several loosely connected stories following the maturation of the Chinese/Puerto Rican main character who goes by both Rafael Zhang and Zhang Zhongshan in different situations.
Tropes used in China Mountain Zhang include:
- Babel Fish: Augmentation.
- Character Title: "China Mountain" would be a reasonable translation of 中山, or zhōngshān.
- China Takes Over the World: The entire premise.
- Culture Clash: Major theme of this novel.
- Deadly Game: The kite race.
- Gayngst: A major cause of angst for the titular character Zhongshan Zhang and co, cumulates in Haibao's suicide. Somewhat justified for according to The Other Wiki homosexual conduct wasn't officially decriminalized in mainland China when this book was written.
- I Just Want to Be Beautiful: San-Xiang. She finally gets it but what happens afterwards is horrible.
- The Red Planet: Mars base.
