Awkward Embraces
Nerdy girls need love, too.
Starring a hot, fresh young cast, Awkward Embraces combines the fall-down funny geek humor of The Big Bang Theory--only from the female perspective--and the steamy seductiveness of "Sex and the City" with a relevant, "we've all been there" twist.
Written and produced by, and starring Jessica Mills, and co-starring Candis Phlegm and Lyndsey Doolen, the series is directed and edited by Adam Finmann, with PJ Gaynard as director of photography. IMDB says the show ran for 21 episodes in 2010 and 2011.
The series follows the dating adventures and misadventures of three L.A. girls who prove that just because a girl is hot, it doesn't necessarily follow that she has a man, or even that she'd know what to do with one if she got one. Jessica, the Star Trek/comic book geeky girl, seems to always say and do just the wrong thing at the wrong time to the wrong guy, proving that, well, "Nerdy girls need love, too." Her friends' awkward attempts to help her generally backfire, and though their luck with men is a little better than hers, it's still not enough to keep from being face-aching funny.
And finally, no matter how embarrassing or frustrating or upsetting or…promising…the date might have been for Jessica or Candis or Lyndsey, they've still got each other at the end of the day…to laugh at.
- Crowning Moment of Funny: Jessica having a one-night stand after a party with a guy, not knowing what to do and asking him if he wants a donut. Upon her return, she gets nervous and leaves the donut on his doorstep and runs away. Apparently based on a true story!
- Cannot Spit It Out: Jessica. A lot. Unless she encounters a fellow geek.
- Fan Girl
- Genre Savvy
- Hollywood Nerd
- It Was His Sled: Candis' '"Citizen Kane-obsessed date shouts this out, although not until after the movie ends.
- Shout-Out: A lot, especially to typical nerdy programs. Lampshaded in episode 205, when Candis and Lyndsey create a profile on a nerdy dating Web site (BeamMeUpLove.com) for Jessica and attempt to remember some of her favourite shows and movies. They end up porno versions of said shows and movies, like Klingon My Face.
