West Gippsland Football Netball League

The West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) is an Australian rules football and netball competition in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The competition comprises four grades of football (seniors, reserves, under-18 and under-16) and six grades of netball (A-grade, B-grade, C-grade, 17-&-Under, 15-&-Under and 13-&-Under).

History

A Senior Leagues Review that commenced at the beginning of 2015, conducted by AFL Gippsland to address issues of competitive imbalance and club sustainability, brought major change to structure of the lower Gippsland area.[1]

The West Gippsland Football Netball Competition in its present incarnation began in 2017 as part of the AFL Gippsland Senior Football Leagues Review of 2015-16. Five teams from the Ellinbank & District Football League became founding members - Cora Lynn, Nar Nar Goon, Kooweerup, Bunyip and Garfield - while five teams crossed over from the Alberton Football League - Phillip Island, Kilcunda Bass, Dalyston, Inverloch Kongwak and Korumburra-Bena. [2]

In the opening 2017 season, Inverloch Kongwak won the inaugural senior premiership by defeating Cora Lynn in a huge 95-point win. Twelve months later, Phillip Island defeated Koo Wee Rup by 99 points in another blowout decider.

In the 2018 AFL Gippsland League Review, Tooradin Dalmore and Warragul Industrials moved to the West Gippsland League,[3] expanding the competition to twelve clubs.

Magpies2017--Played in local Wonthaggi competitions since the 1910s. Founded the Bass Valley Wonthaggi FL in 1955 stayed until the league folded 1995. Joined the Alberton league in 1996
Garfield
Stars2017--Joined the original West Gippsland Association in 1936. Played in the WGLFL from 2002-2009. Moved to Ellinbank DFL in 2010.
Inverloch Kongwak
Sea Eagles2017-1

Formed from a merger in 1957 the team competed in the Bass Valley Wonthaggi FL until the league folded 1995. Joined the Alberton league in 1996
Kilcunda Bass
Panthers2017--Formed from a merger in 1957 the team competed in the Bass Valley Wonthaggi FL until the league folded 1995. Joined the West Gippsland League in 1995 before moving to the Alberton league in 2005
Koo Wee Rup
Demons2017--Founded the original West Gippsland Association in 1927. Moved to Ellinbank DFL in 2000.
Korumburra-Bena
Giants2017--Formed from a merger in 2001 after the Bena club was no longer viable. Stayed in Alberton league until 2016
Nar Nar Goon
The Goons2017--Joined the West Gippsland Assoc in 1932. Moved to the Ellinbank DFL in 2005.
Phillip Island

Tooradin Dalmore
Seagulls2019--Played in the West Gippsland FL from 1976 to 2004. Transferred to the Casey Cardinia FNL (which later became the South East FNL). Moved from the South East FNL when it disbanded after the 2018 season. Coached by Lachie Gillespie for past 7 years, with Nathan Jagoe stiff you miss out on the job for past 3 years
Warragul Industrials
Dusties2019--Formed in 1948, played in Ellinbank DFL until 2018.
