Velidhoo (Noonu Atoll)

Velidhoo (Dhivehi: ވެލިދޫ) is one of the inhabited islands of Noonu Atoll in the Maldives.

History

The origin of the first settlers of Velidhu remains a mystery. Historians date the earliest settlements to the 5th century BC with Aryan immigrants coming from India and Sri Lanka.

The island has many historic monuments including a tree (Velidhu bodu nikagas), which has been there for more than five centuries. Much of the history of Velidhoo is unknown, but research is ongoing.

Geography

The island is 166.52 km (103 mi; 90 nmi) north of the country's capital, Malé.[2]

Demography

The Veliduans are a mix of people from two of the nearby islands in the atoll, Magoodhoo and Tholhendhoo. Velidhu is the most populous island of Noonu Atoll. The Veliduan language is Dhivehi.

Economy

The island is said to be one of the greatest fishing areas in the Maldives.

Transport

The new harbour was opened by President Abdulla Yameen in 2017.[4] The harbour, built by MTCC, is 240 m (800 ft) long and 76 m (250 ft) wide.[5][6]
