Gameplay

Tom and Jerry in Fist of Furry features more than 8 levels, each with themes like the kitchen from the cartoon and a boxing ring.[3] With gameplay based on slapstick comedy,[4][5] players interact with the environment and scattered usable objects like chairs, pool cues, and bombs.[6] Each of the eight characters have unique attacks.[4] Powerups include invincibility to items (but not to punches or the stage hazards), or a green gas powerup which can contaminate a touched opponent.[4]

Besides Tom and Jerry, the game contains other characters from the television series such as Butch Cat, Duckling (Quacker), Nibbles (Tuffy) and Spike and Tyke.[1][5]

Development

Development began in late 1999, and was in final submission to Nintendo of America by August 2000. They had chosen Nintendo 64 due to its lack of fighting games. They wanted to simplify controls for all age groups, including the very young, so they chose to forgo the typical combination moves.[7]

Reception

Ryan Davis of GameSpot called Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry challenging but also accessible to younger players.[8] He praised the game's controls but he also criticized the game's difficulty balance.[8]

N64 Magazine criticized the game as a whole, in particular due to the lack of special attacks and the mundane attacks.[6] They said that the characters were not drawn badly and that the locations in the game from the cartoons were a plus.[6]

Nintendo Power gave the game an 8.3 rating and said it was the best 3D Nintendo 64 fighting game,[9] due to the multiplayer elements, interactive fighting environments, and precision controls.[9]

Sequel

In 2002, Tom and Jerry in War of the Whiskers was released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox (though the latter two were North American exclusives). It was the only NewKidCo game ever released to receive a T rating.

gollark: We initiated Contingency 86G, so actually it isn't.
gollark: I'm sure it is.
gollark: Oh, my internet connection randomly dropped in speed by 30%, that is probably it.
gollark: I can't fix it because it's timing out horribly.
