Sidharth Shukla

Sidharth Shukla (born 12 December 1980)[1] is an Indian actor, model and television host from Mumbai. He started his career as a model. He won the World's Best Model title in November 2005, beating 40 other participants from across Asia, Latin America, and Europe.[2]

He made his acting debut with a lead role in the 2008 show Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na.[3] He is also known for portraying Shiv in Balika Vadhu and Parth Bhanushali in Dil Se Dil Tak. He has won both Bigg Boss 13 and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7.[4] He also participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6. [5] In 2014, Shukla made his Bollywood debut in a supporting role in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.[6] In 2019, Shukla was among the top 10 most searched personalities in India on Google.[7]

Early life

Shukla was born into a Hindu Brahmin[8] family in Mumbai to Ashok Shukla, a civil engineer working with the Reserve Bank of India and Rita Shukla. He has two elder sisters. Shukla attended St. Xavier's High School, Fort, Mumbai and later completed his degree in Interior Design at Rachana Sansad School of Interior Design.[9][10] Shukla has described himself as a very athletic child, and represented his school in tennis and football.[11] He played against Italian football club, AC Milan’s under-19 team, on their Mumbai visit as part of Festa Italiana.[12]

Career

Modelling

In 2004, as a model, Shukla participated in the Gladrags Manhunt and Megamodel Contest, where he ended up as the runner-up.[13]

In 2005, he represented India at the World's Best Model, one of world's most prestigious modelling contests, held in Turkey and became the first Indian, as well as the first Asian, to win the title beating 40 contestants from across Asia, Latin America, and Europe.[14][15] After winning the title, Sidharth was seen in many advertisements like Bajaj Avenger, ICICI, Digjam and many more.[16]

Television

In 2008, he made his acting debut with a lead role in the television show Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na on Sony TV opposite Aastha Chaudhary. Shukla played Shubh Ranawat, a man dedicated to his work and family.[17] The show ended in February, 2009.

In 2009, he played Veer Vardhan Singh's character in Jaane Pehchaane Se... Ye Ajnabbi on Star One opposite Sanjeeda Sheikh. The show ended in September, 2010.[18]

In 2010, he also appeared in a few episodes of Aahat.[19]

In 2011, he appeared in the weekend show Love U Zindagi opposite Pavitra Punia on StarPlus. The show was inspired by the Bollywood movie, Jab We Met, where Shukla played Rahul Kashyap's character.[20][21] He also appeared in a few episodes of CID.[22]

Balika Vadhu and Bollywood

In 2012, Sidharth played the iconic character of District Collector, Shivraj Alok Shekhar, a.k.a. Shiv, in the Balika Vadhu.[23] It was his portrayal of Shivraj Alok Shekhar in the long-running Colors TV social drama series Balika Vadhu which rose him to prominence and earned him widespread recognition and popularity, including several awards and nominations. He got "GR8! Performer of the Year (Male)" award in Indian Television Academy (ITA) Awards.[24] The ratings of the show increased after his entry. He left the show in 2015, when his character, Shiv, dies fighting with terrorists.[25][26]

In 2013, Shukla participated in the celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6.[27] After getting eliminated in the 11th week, Shukla said in an interview, "I completely enjoyed my journey on the show. There was a lot I could learn. I would have loved to continue".[28] It was reported that Shukla had signed a 3-film-deal with Dharma Productions.[6]

In 2014, Shukla debuted in the romantic comedy Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania in a supporting role, playing the character of an NRI doctor named Angad Bedi. The film earned him an award for "Breakthrough Supporting Performance (Male)" in the 2015 Stardust Awards.[30]

Hosting, Khatron Ke Khiladi and Dil Se Dil Tak

In 2014, Sidharth was named the host of Savdhaan India named as Savdhaan India – Fight Back Now.[31][32] He brought the stories of common people who fought against crime.[33]

In 2015, After exiting from Balika Vadhu, he hosted India's Got Talent 6, with Bharti Singh as co-host of the show.[34]

In 2016, Sidharth won the stunt reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7.[35][36][37] Then, he hosted India's Got Talent 7, along with Bharti Singh as co-host.[38] Sidharth also played role of Mr. Chakraborty, a rich businessman, in a Kazakhstan movie, Бизнес по-казахски (Business in Kazakhstan).[39][40]

In 2017, he played the role of Parth Bhanushali in Dil Se Dil Tak with co-stars Rashami Desai and Jasmin Bhasin. The show was inspired by the Bollywood movie, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke.[41]

Bigg Boss 13 and further success

In 2019, he won the reality show Bigg Boss 13.[42][43] Ormax media rated Shukla to be the most popular contestant of Bigg Boss 13 where he was ranked number one throughout 20 weeks.[44] He was voted as the most favourite contestant of Bigg Boss 13 in the poll conducted by Hidustan Times, India TV News and The Times of India.[45][46][47] He was also the most tweeted contestant of Bigg Boss 13.[48] Sidharth won the Bigg Boss #AsliFans (Asli Fans) contest on Twitter conducted by Voot by getting the highest number of tweets compared to all other contestants, with hashtag #SidharthKeAsliFans.[49][50] After winning Bigg Boss 13, Sidharth appeared in a music video titled "Bhula Dunga" with his Bigg Boss co-contestant and a very good friend Shehnaaz Kaur Gill.[51][52] Then, he appeared in a romantic music video "Dil Ko Karaar Aaya" opposite Neha Sharma.[53]

Sidharth is a practitioner of physical fitness.[54] In 2014, he won the Gold Awards Most Fit Actor award.[55] He was also awarded with Wellness Icon of the Year award in 8th Geospa Asiaspa India Awards.[56] In 2019, Shukla was the 9th most searched personality in India on Google.[57]
