The airport was fairly new in 1952 when Braniff and Central DC-3s stopped there; Braniff left in 1952-53 and Central/Frontier pulled out in 1978.

SMB Stage Line of Fort Worth, TX operated a passenger service through McAlester to Tulsa via Muskogee and Dallas via Paris, TX in the early 1970s, using Beech 99 Airliner aircraft. The service was not successful and SMB Stage Line reverted to all-cargo services by 1975.

The last scheduled airline service at McAlester was by Pacific Coast Airlines, which operated Piper Navajos to and from Oklahoma City in the early 1990s. The service did not last long, less than a year.

The airport covers 257 acres (104 ha); its one runway, 2/20, is 5,602 x 100 ft (1,707 x 30 m) concrete.[1]
