Background

The school originally opened as part of St. Anastasia Catholic School and opened under the name John Carroll High School in 1965 as Diocesan regional high school. The school was named in honor of Pope John XXIII and Bishop Coleman Carroll. John Carroll is a co-ed Catholic high school serving nearly 400 students in grades 9-12. The school is located in the city of Ft. Pierce, Florida and serves students from Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee counties. In fact, John Carroll is the only Catholic high school within an hour radius of Ft. Pierce. The school is accredited by Advanced and holds membership in the National Catholic Education Association.

Since John Carroll began accepting the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship through Step Up for Students in 2012, our student body is now more representative and reflective of our community. We embrace our growing diversity and consider our unique cultural pluralism one of our greatest strengths. The student body is roughly 72% Caucasian, 11% African-American, 13% Hispanic, and 1% other ethnic backgrounds. The school accepts the Florida Tax Credit scholarship (StepUp for Students and AAA), theGardiner Scholarship, and the McKay Scholarship.[3]

Academics

John Carroll High School’s academic program consists of seven, 45-minute class periods a day, with the option to add additional fine arts classes during a “zero hour” before school. John Carroll maintains high academic standards and expectations for all students; therefore, the school offers Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, honors, and academic classes. There are strict guidelines and prerequisites that a student must meet in order to participate in an AP classes; the school does this to ensure a high level of academic rigor in these classes and make sure all students are prepared to meet the demands of an AP course. Eight dual enrollment classes are offered on campus through a partnership with Indian River State College, and students can also elect to take additional dual enrollment classes off campus.

The AP classes offered are: Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, Environmental Science, Human Geography, Physics, Psychology, Research, Seminar, Spanish, Statistics, US History, US Government, World History. [4]
