The institute provides a wide range of research and information services for the modeling, simulation and training community of Central Florida. As well, the institute aids in undergraduate and graduate studies in modeling and simulation leading to bachelors degrees, masters degrees, professional science masters and doctoral degrees. IST is a member of the National Center for Simulation.

On January 27, 2020, the former director of the institute, Dr. Randall Shumaker, was fired along with two other faculty, after an internal investigation found that a doctoral student was receiving unauthorized assistance for their doctoral degree as well as plagiarizing their dissertation from other members of the research lab.[3]
