Primaries were held on June 9, 2020, coinciding with primaries for U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Georgia House of Representatives, county and regional prosecutorial offices to determine which candidates appear on the November 3 ballot.

Following the 2018 state senate elections, Republicans maintained effective control of the Senate with 35 members, losing two seats to the Democratic caucus. However, the 4th Senate district became vacant upon the death of Jack Hill.

To reclaim control of the chamber from Republicans, the Democrats would need to net 8 seats without the Lieutenant Governor's office. Democrats filed candidacies for 43 total seats in the State Senate, the highest number of Democratic candidacies for State Senate since 1998.
