History

Shaft was founded in September 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao, a former employee of Mushi Production.[1][2] In 1987, the studio released its first independent production, an original video animation entitled Yume kara, Samenai (夢から、さめない).[3] From 2001 to 2005, Shaft collaborated with Gainax in the production of several anime television series (Mahoromatic, This Ugly yet Beautiful World, He is My Master).[4]

In 2004, Hiroshi Wakao retired as president of the company and was succeeded by production manager Mitsutoshi Kubota. Later that year, Kubota hired Akiyuki Shinbo to direct the anime television series Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase, impressed by his unique direction for the anime series The SoulTaker and Le Portrait de Petit Cossette.[5] Shinbo brought on a number of new talents to Shaft following Moon Phase, those of which include Shin Ōnuma, Tatsuya Oishi, Yukihiro Miyamoto, Tomoyuki Itamura, and Naoyuki Tatsuwa, who have collaborated with him on virtually all subsequent productions. Under Shinbō's direction, the studio has developed an identifiable visual style characterized by striking color palettes, closeup and angular shots, abstract background designs, rapid cuts, changes in art style, the incorporation of real photographs, and a signature tilted head pose.[6] Kubota has attributed the development of this style to the studio's strategy of maintaining a consistent team across a diverse variety of productions.[5]

A portion of the studio's works are co-written by Fuyashi Tō (Japanese: 東富耶子, Hepburn: Tō Fuyashi), a pseudonym used by the staff of Shaft similar to Sunrise's Hajime Yatate and Toei Animation's Izumi Todo.[7]
