William McSwain

William Miller McSwain (born 1969) is the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.[1]

Biography

McSwain graduated from B. Reed Henderson High School as valedictorian, and then received his Bachelor of Arts with honors from Yale University. He received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Prior to law school, he served as an infantry officer and scout/sniper platoon commander in the United States Marine Corps.

After graduation from law school, McSwain served as a clerk for Judge Midge Rendell of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

From 2003 to 2006, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, prosecuting various federal crimes.

Prior to becoming a U.S. Attorney, McSwain was a partner at Drinker Biddle & Reath, where his practice focused on white collar criminal matters, corporate internal investigations, and complex business litigation. He was also the president of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.[2]

United States Attorney nomination

On December 20, 2017, President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate McSwain to be the next United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. On December 21, 2017, his nomination was sent to the United States Senate.[3] On March 15, 2018, his nomination was reported out of committee by voice vote.[4] On March 20, 2018, his nomination was confirmed by voice vote. He was sworn in on April 6, 2018.[5]
