History

A branch library for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Tsinghua University

In 1912, Tsinghua School founded a reading room named "Tsinghua School Reading Room" (Chinese: 清华学校图书室).[2] The library was started in 1916 and completed in 1919 (now the eastern part of the old library). It was renamed "Tsinghua School Library" (Chinese: 清华学校图书馆). It was enlarged in 1931. The eastern part of the library was designed by Henry Murphy and built by Tailai Foreign Bank (Chinese: 泰来洋行).[3] Its building area is 2,114-square-metre (22,750 sq ft). The library's central-western and eastern-rear rooms was designed by alumnus Yang Tingbao. Construction began in March 1930 and was completed in November 1931. The building area is 5,826-square-metre (62,710 sq ft). In the center of the eaves of the library is a plaque, on which there are the words "Library". In 2001, the old Tsinghua Library, as a part of the "Early Architecture of Tsinghua University", has been designated as a "Major National Historical and Cultural Site in Beijing" by the State Council of China.[4] In 2016 it was listed as the "First Batch of 20th Century Chinese Architectural Heritage".[5]

The Tsinghua University Main Library consists of 3 buildings: the Old Library building, Run Run Shaw Library building and Mochtar Riady Library building.[6][7][8]
