He hailed from Gjøvik and came through the youth ranks of the city's traditionally working-class club Gjøvik Sport, the squad also boasting Atle Maurud and Tom Henning Hovi. In 1991 Hovi and Hansen trialled with Kongsvinger and were ultimately given the chance at HamKam.[1][2] After failing to break through at HamKam, Hansen took two seasons in his hometown's SK Gjøvik-Lyn.[3]

He then played for Jevnaker IF in 1995 and joined Sogndal Fotball in 1996, both on the second tier.[4] He helped win promotion for Sogndal and played 30 Eliteserien games over three seasons. In 2000 and 2001 he played low-key with fourth-tier Fagerborg BK[5] before becoming a coach.

Hansen coached Stabæk youth teams before moving home to Gjøvik. In 2007 he was hired as player developer of Raufoss IL as well as coach at Raufoss Upper Secondary School.[6] In 2009 he became director of sports in Gjøvik FF, serving as such and later as assistant coach until the end of 2011.[7][8] He also briefly featured on the pitch.[9] He later held lesser coaching position such as children's coached in Vind IL and assistant in Moelven IL.
