During the COVID-19 pandemic

This Week in Virology grew its audience under the COVID-19 pandemic. Daniel Griffin, a medical doctor from the New York area,[5] became a reoccurring guest to give clinical updates on Coronavirus disease 2019.

The podcast received criticism for getting too involved in politics during this time, to which they replied that they wouldn't get involved in politics if politics wouldn't get involved in the science.[6]
