Sumner family
The Sumner family is a prominent Massachusetts political family that traces its ancestry back to William Sumner, born in Bicester, England who emigrated to become an early settler of Dorchester, Massachusetts, now part of Boston.[1] Among his many descendants are:
- Increase Sumner, early governor of Massachusetts
- William H. Sumner, son of Increase and early Massachusetts historian
- Charles Sumner, distant cousin of Increase and William, and abolitionist U.S. Senator during the U.S. Civil War
- Edwin Vose Sumner, Union general during the U.S. Civil War, second cousin of Charles Sumner.[2]
- Edwin Vose Sumner Jr., son of Edwin Vose Sumner and Union general during the U.S. Civil War
- Samuel S. Sumner, son of Edwin Vose Sumner Sr. and U.S. Army general during the later 19th century.
