Stanisław Hutten-Czapski

Stanislaw hrabia Hutten-Czapski, of Leliwa (b. 1779 in Nesvizh, d. 1844 in Kėdainiai)[1][2] was a Polish Count and Colonel in the Napoleonic wars. He was the son of Francis Stanislaus Kostka, the governor of Chelmno[2] and Veronica Radziwill (1754-Unknown), sister of Prince Karol Stanisław "Panie Kochanku" Radziwiłł.[2]

Early life

Stanislaw and his brother Karol, spent their childhood at the Nesvizh castle with their uncle Prince Karol Radziwill, the wealthiest magnate in Poland. They were then educated by the Piarist Fathers in a college in Vilnius.

Napoleonic War

In July, 1812, Emperor Napoleon Bonapart appointed Stanislaw as Colonel and commanding officer of the 22 Infantry Regiment of the Army of the Duchy of Warsaw.[3][1] He participated in the beginning of Napoleon`s invasion of Russia, fighting bravely in the battle of Koidanov (today known as Dzyarzhynsk), for which he received the Order of Virtuti Militari.[4] Stanislaw accompanied Napoleon into Russia and as well as in his ignominious retreat. While withdrawing, Stanislaw fought in the battle of Berezina[5] and that of Hanau in 1813, in which his close friend Prince Dominik Hiernom Radziwill was killed.[4] Stanislaw was awarded the French Legion of Honor for the battle of Dresden in August, 1813.[4] The Tsarist authorities confiscated his Lithuanian Estates, but later Stanislaw and his brother Karol were amnestied by Tsar Alexander, and their properties in Lithuania were returned to them. Stanislaw´s estate at Lakhva had been destroyed during the war, and he received the Kėdainiaii estate in Lithuania as part of his maternal inheritance from the Radziwills.[4] He established himself in Swojatycze, near Minsk, and dedicated himself to agricultural activities, hunting, and purchasing and selling properties. At the end of his life he found himself in economic difficulties.[4] He died in 1844.

Personal life

In 1810 Stanisław Czapski married Sophia (1797-1866),[2] the daughter of the Castellan of Minsk, Michała Obuchowicza (1760-1818),[6] and had four children: Michalina, Marian, Adolf and Edward.[2]. Stanislaw`s brother Karol married Sophia`s sister, Fabianna Obuchowicza (1787-1876)[7].
