History

Established in 1840, the uyezd was included as part of Caspian Oblast from 1841 to 1846. In 1846, Shamakhi was chosen as the capital of the newly established Shamakhi Governorate. But, due to 1859 Shamakhi earthquake, the city of Shamakhi and the uyezd suffered great damage, which resulted in change of capital of Shamakhi Governorate from Shamakhi to Baku. After this, the governorate was renamed to Baku Governorate.[3]

After collapse of the Russian Empire, Shamakhi briefly became part of Transcaucasian Federation. After its collapse, Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared independence and considered Shamakhi to be part of her territory, but the uyezd and city were still in control of Bolsheviks. In July 1918, Islamic Army of the Caucasus and Azerbaijani forces liberated Shamakhi.

In 1920, Red Army invaded Azerbaijan, resulting in the collapse of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Shamakhi uyezd was made part of Azerbaijan SSR, until its abolishment in 1929.

Population

According to 1897 census, 121,842 people inhabited the uyezd, of which 20,007 lived in the city of Shamakhi. The census recorded 89,840 native speakers of Azerbaijani (the census indicates “tatar”), 14,283 Armenians and 11,362 Russians.[4]

The population declined to 91,185 by 1926.[5]
