Sato Oki

Sato Oki (born December 24, 1977 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Japanese designer and architect. He is the head of the design firm Nendo.[1]

Life and career

Oki was born in Toronto, Canada, as his father's job took the family there. He studied at Tokyo Gakugei Oizumi Junior High School and Waseda University Senior High School, then graduated from the Department of Architecture, School of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, as the top student in 2000.

In 2002, just after completing his academic course at the department of architecture of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering at Waseda University, he established the design office "Nendo". His wide range of works includes product design, interior design, architecture, graphic design and corporate branding.

Newsweek magazine named him as one of the "100 Japanese People Respected by the World" in 2006 and his office as one of the "100 Japanese SMEs Receiving Worldwide Attention" in 2007, respectively.[2][3]

Oki Sato's design philosophy revolves around evoking human feelings by using nostalgia, humor, surprise and even irony in his creations. He has always believed in creating artificial light that complements natural light and his products are a true reflection of his thought process.[4]

Between 2012 and 2014, he was a part-time lecturer at Waseda University.

In 2012, he became the youngest winner of the designer of the year at UK lifestyle magazine "Wallpaper"[5] and "Elle Deco International Design Award".[6]

In 2013, he was elected as "Guest of honor" at the Stockholm international furniture fair, the largest interior design exhibition in Northern Europe, and also at "Interior Design Show" in Toronto.[1]

In 2015, he was awarded "Designer of the Year" at Maison & Objet Paris, the largest interior design trade fair in Europe.[7]

In 2016, he was in charge of designing the new uniform for the rugby football club of his alma mater, Waseda University.[8]
