The Herald was founded by Gene Mahoney in 1998 as a newspaper, distributed to cafes, bars, and shops around San Francisco. Eventually the Herald was distributed across the Bay Area. It was originally published bimonthly, then monthly.

In 2006 the San Francisco Herald became the California Herald, a quarterly newspaper with over 30 editions from Sacramento to Santa Monica.

As advertisers abandoned newspapers in favor of the Internet, the Herald ceased print publication in 2008. Its web site was updated occasionally for the next few years.

In 2016 the San Francisco Herald returned to print as a bimonthly newsletter, printed on white bond paper, and distributed around the city’s Nob Hill district.
