Polad Hashimov

Polad Israyil oglu Hashimov (Azerbaijani: Polad İsrayıl oğlu Həşimov; 2 January 1975 – 14 July 2020) was an Azerbaijani soldier and major general (2019).[1][2]

He was killed on 14 July 2020, during the skirmishes between the Azerbaijani Armed Forces and the Armenian Armed Forces on the front line on the state border between the Tovuz region of Azerbaijan and the Tavush region of Armenia.[1][2][3][4][5]

Life and honors

Polad Hashimov was born in 1975 in the city of Qabala. Hashimov's roots are from the village of Vandam, Gabala region of Azerbaijan.[6] He graduated from high school in Sumgait, then the Baku Higher Combined Arms Command School and the Turkish Military Academy.[6]

In 2003, Major Hashimov, by a decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, for special merits in protecting the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, for differences in the performance of official duties and tasks assigned to the military unit, was awarded the medal "For Military Merit".[7]

In 2009, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, by order of President Ilham Aliyev for special merits in protecting the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and for outstanding merits in the performance of official duties and tasks assigned to the military unit, he was awarded the medal "For the Fatherland".[8] In 2014, for special merits in preserving the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, for outstanding achievements in fulfilling military duties and tasks assigned to the military unit and for merits in the field of military education, by the order of President Ilham Aliyev, Polad Hashimov was awarded the Order for Service to the Fatherland, III degree.[1][9]

He served near Murovdağ and in the Dashkasan District, in the contact areas of the Azerbaijani and Armenian armed forces[6]. Polad Hashimov participated in armed clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh in April 2016 and was wounded.[6] He participated in the capture of one of the heights near the village of Talış, which was named in his honor, "Polad’s Post".[6] For special merits in protecting the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and for the difference in fulfilling the tasks assigned to the Armed Forces, Polad Hashimov was awarded the Order for Service to the Fatherland, II degree, on 19 April 2016.[1][10]

On 24 June 2019, by an order of the President of Azerbaijan, Polad Hashimov was awarded the rank of Major General.[11][12]

Major General Hashimov, in his position as chief of staff of the North military unit, was killed on 14 July 2020, during the fighting on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the Tovuz direction.[1] At the time of his death, he was married, he had a daughter and two sons.[6]

On 15 July, the body of Polad Hashimov was interred in the II Alley of Honor in Baku.[13] On the same day, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev had a telephone conversation with Hashimov's mother, Samaya Hashimova, expressed deep condolences to her, and wished for perseverance.[14]

Memory

Following the instructions of the President Ilham Aliyev, the street in front of the Alley of Martyrs that starts from the intersection with Hazi Aslanov street and ends in the intersection with Arif Hagverdiyev Street in central Gabala was named after General Polad Hasimov on 5 July.[15][16][17]
