Munir Hafiez

Lieutenant-General (retd) Munir Hafiez (born March 1949) is a retired Pakistan Army general and the former chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of the Government of Pakistan. Before his appointment in 2001, he served in the Pakistani Army for 38 years.

Career

Hafiez was commissioned in the 39th PMA Long Course in October 1969. He also stayed GOC 7th Infantry Division at Peshawar and as Commander, XXXI Corps at Bahawalpur from August 2000 to October 2001.

He was replaced by Lt. Gen. Shahid Aziz after completing a controversial four-year tenure at NAB from October 2001 to October 2005.[1] He also served as Managing Director and CEO of Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited. He is now Chairman Board of Trustees of the Zindagi Trust, a private organisation.

Corruption

In 2012 the Public Accounts Committee, a parliamentary body which also monitors cases of corruption had directed the National Accountability Bureau to investigate Lt. Gen. (retired) Munir Hafiez for allegedly abusing his authority to get a lucrative state-issued license for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. This investigation failed as Lt. Gen. Munir Hafiez had already got retired from NAB and there was a case on this which went to the Supreme Court Of Pakistan but Lt. Gen. Munir Hafiez was never called to come to court. In addition, various investigative reports in papers have also alleged other major examples of corruption by Gen Hafiez whilst holding the charge of (former) Chairman of the NAB.[2]
