Michael Francis Crotty

Michael Francis Crotty (born 26 March 1970) is an Irish prelate of the Catholic Church who was appointed a titular archbishop and Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso in 2020.

Biography

Michael Francis Crotty was born in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, on 26 March 1970. He studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Maynooth and the Pontifical Irish College and was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne on 3 July 1994. After ordination he earned a doctoral degree in ecclesiastical history and a licentiate in canon law.[1]

In 1990 he earned a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology and modern history with honours from the National University of Ireland (Maynooth) at Saint Patrick’s College. He then earned a BDiv in 1993 at the Pontifical University, Maynooth at Saint Patrick’s College. In 1997 he was awarded a licenciate in ecclesiastical history from the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1999 he was awarded a licenciate in canon law, and a doctorate in 2001 in Ecclesiastical History.[2]

To prepare for a diplomatic career he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1997.[3] He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2001 and then worked in the diplomatic missions in Kenya (2001–2004),[lower-alpha 1] Canada (2004–2007), Iraq and Jordan (2007–2009), and First Counsellor in Spain (2017–2020), and in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State (2009–2017).[1][4]

On 1 February 2020, Pope Francis appointed him titular archbishop of Lindisfarne and Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso.[1] On 25 April he was given the responsibilities of Apostolic Nuncio to Niger as well.[5] He was ordained Archbishop in Cobh Cathedral on 15 August 2020.
