Education

Career

Spada is currently Professor of Addictive Behaviours and Mental Health and Deputy Lead of the Centre for Addictive Behaviours at London South Bank University.

Spada is also editor-in-chief of the leading addictions psychology and psychiatry journal Addictive Behaviors,[2] and founder and editor-in-chief of its sister journal Addictive Behaviors Reports,[3] both published by Elsevier. In addition, he serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of UK SMART Recovery and as a trustee of GambleAware.[4]

In February 2020, Spada was elected Fellow of the British Psychological Society for his contribution to the advancement and dissemination of psychological knowledge and practice in the field of addictive behaviours.[5]

Work

Spada has made a significant contribution to the understanding of metacognitive mechanisms underlying general vulnerability to addictive behaviours, identifying the role of metacognitive beliefs across addictive behaviours,[6][7][8][9][10] putting forward the first metacognitive therapy model and treatment protocol for addictive behaviours,[11][12][13][14] and operationalising the construct of "desire thinking",[15][16] a thinking style linked to the escalation and persistence of craving. Spada has also developed metacognitive models of cyberchondria,[17] procrastination,[18] and self-critical rumination and self-esteem.[19]

Spada is an advocate of employing idiographic and functional approaches to the conceptualisation and treatment of psychological problems in cognitive behavioural therapy,[20][21] supporting psychological therapists in working with clients taking (or withdrawing from) prescribed drugs,[22] raising awareness about problematic betting and gambling behaviour,[23] and safeguarding young people from the threats to well-being arising from excessive technological use.[24][25][26] He is the author of over 150 peer reviewed scientific articles[27] and of the successful self-help book Overcoming Problem Drinking, an NHS recommended 'book on prescription' for alcohol misuse.[28][29]
