Garneau also is known for his passion for creating art during his time away from his wife.[1] His art generally consists of prints that he places white drizzles of paint upon.[2] In March 2014, Garneau created a piece commemorating the Rwanda cycling team by taking their photo and plastering the word "Rwanda" over it.[3] Louis has said that he hopes he is remembered for his art more than for his bikes, family, or "that thing that happens with the queen," as he calls it.[4] In March 2020, Louis Garneau, in debt of $32 million, took shelter from its creditors and is actively seeking new investors. No less than 66 workers at the Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures head office near Quebec City lost their jobs during the year.[5]

He competed in the individual road race event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.[6]
