Fashion District also known as Santee Alley is a garment neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles.[1] The neighborhood caters to wholesale selling. With 4,000+ independently owned and operated retail and wholesale businesses, you’ll find apparel, footwear, accessories, and fabrics.

Previously known as the Garment District, the LA Fashion District was developed in the early 20th Century by mostly European immigrants who relocated their garment manufacturing businesses here. The garment district’s evolution to include retailing in addition to manufacturing and wholesale sales, began in the Santee Alley. An alley that serviced the back doors of manufacturing and wholesale businesses, these businesses would open retail outlets out their back doors for one or two days a week. These retail operations grew into 7-day a week businesses along four blocks - morphing the District into the LA Fashion Industry’s retail and wholesale mecca.

On January 2, 1996 the Garment District formally began changing the area’s name and image to the Los Angeles Fashion District courtesy of one of the City’s first BIDs (Business Improvement District). At the time the newly coined Fashion District was composed of 56 blocks and since then, has nearly doubled in size to its current span of 107 blocks.

As Los Angeles' first property-based BID, the LA Fashion District BID has pioneered a collaborative effort among area stakeholders that continues to foster a clean, safe, and vibrant environment for everyone who experiences the district. We are promoting increased business activity, enhancing property values, and attracting further investment in the area.

The LA Fashion District BID serves a 107-block area generally between 7th Street to the north and the Santa Monica 10 Freeway to the south, and from Broadway to the west and Paloma Street to the east. For a closer look at the district boundaries, see the LA Fashion District Walking Map & Guide.

The LA Fashion District BID is 1 of 9 BIDs in Downtown LA and 1 of over 40 BIDs in the City of Los Angeles. A binding assessment levied on property owners funds BID activities, and a 15-member Board of Directors elected by district property owners oversees the organization.
