A sage is a wise old man. The following people were known as "sage" during their lifetimes:
- Thomas Jefferson, the Sage of Monticello[1]
- Thomas Carlyle, the Sage of Chelsea,[2] also the Sage of Ecclefechan[3][4]
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Sage of Concord[5]
- H. L. Mencken, the Sage of Baltimore[6]
- Warren Buffett, the Sage of Omaha[7] (also known as the Wizard of Omaha[8] and the Oracle of Omaha[9])
- Richard Murphy, the Sage of Downham Market,[10] then Sage of Ely[11]
- Luis Aragonés, the Sage of Hortaleza[12]
