Animal Kingdom is an American drama television series developed by Jonathan Lisco, based on the 2010 Australian film by David Michôd. The series follows a 17-year-old boy (Finn Cole), who, after the death of his mother, moves in with the Codys, a criminal family clan governed by matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody (Ellen Barkin). Animal Kingdom debuted on TNT on June 14, 2016.

On July 6, 2016, the series was renewed for a second season of thirteen episodes.[1] On July 27, 2017, TNT renewed the series for a third season.[2] On July 2, 2018, TNT renewed the series for a fourth season.[3] On July 24, 2019, TNT renewed the series for a fifth season.[4] As of August 20, 2019, 49 episodes of Animal Kingdom have aired, concluding the fourth season.

Following his arrest for drug smuggling, Adrian, now living with Deran, has made a deal with the DEA to help them catch the men who hired him. After losing Lena, Pope has become reckless again and is implied either to be planning to attack a cop or to be trying to commit suicide by cop before Craig stops him. The gang, led by Collin, argues over Smurf being part of the gang because she is female and because her long hair makes her stand out. She overhears this and cuts her hair short.

It's revealed that the detective was an old friend of Smurf whom she hired to determine whether J was responsible for Morgan's death. Angela, an old friend of Pope and J's mother Julia, returns despite Smurf's offer to pay her to go away. Throughout the episode Smurf displays increasing signs of illness and ultimately collapses.

After learning of J's role in Angela's relapse, Pope states that once Smurf is gone, J will be too. Craig continues to try to build a family with Ren while Deran begins making plans to flee the country with Adrian after being ordered by Smurf to kill him. Deran makes plans to leave the country for good with Adrian, and the boys know that Jed's family will likely come after them for revenge, Pope having left his truck behind during the escape.

In flashbacks, Smurf escapes from Jed with the help of his wife and seeks the help of her friend Pamela Johnson before returning to Jake. In the present, J learns that Smurf left a minimal amount of money to her family and the rest, including the house, to Pamela in her will. With the help of Frankie, J identifies Pamela and learns that Smurf may have done a string of armed robberies with her in the 80s that Smurf was never caught in. With Smurf dead, her friends and enemies come out of the woodwork, including Billy and Jake, while her fence refuses to do business with J. Craig meets Jake for the first time, unaware that Jake is his father. While Deran originally plans to flee the country with Adrian, he decides to remain behind and breaks up with Adrian for Adrian's safety.
