Smith composed, arranged and sang Old Man from the One Fine Morning gold album, as well as composing and co-composing various other songs for the group. Starting out on valve trombone with Lighthouse, he later moved to trumpet, and then to keyboards when Paul Hoffert left the band. Smith also sang backup vocals on most of the recordings.
