The station served the Kenton area of Newcastle upon Tyne, from June 1905 to July 1929, with goods services continuing until the mid-1960s. Originally opened as Kenton, the station was renamed Kenton Bank in July 1923, to avoid confusion with Kenton station on the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway.[1]

By the 1970s, the station was demolished. The site was redeveloped in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with a Tyne and Wear Metro station opening on the site in May 1981. Originally opening as a terminus station, the line was extended to Newcastle International Airport in 1991. The majority of the Tyne and Wear Metro route between South Gosforth and Airport uses the former alignment of the Ponteland and Darras Hall branch.
