Johanna Warren

Johanna Warren is an American singer-songwriter and actor. To date she has released five LPs under her own name and two early albums under the moniker Sticklips.

Early life

Johanna was born in St. Petersburg, Florida.[1] She studied classical flute as a child, and started teaching herself guitar at age thirteen. She started performing original songs at open mics in high school, and was active in the theater throughout her school days, constantly writing and performing in plays and experimental films.

In college Warren formed indie psych folk band Sticklips. The group released two LPs before disbanding in 2012.

Career

Warren self-released her first solo record, Fates, in 2013 after touring as a backup vocalist with Iron & Wine for a year in 2012.

Her sophomore solo LP, numun, released in 2015 on Team Love Records,[2] made its way on to several year-end lists, including Stereogum's Best New Bands of 2015.[3] Rolling Stone named her an "Artist You Need to Know."[4]

In 2016 Warren founded Spirit House Records,[5] a "radically artist friendly label for mystics, healers and free spirits"[6] on which she released her third solo album Gemini I.

The conceptual "twin" to Gemini I, 2018's Gemini II[7][8][9] received praise from The New York Times,[10] Pitchfork[11][12] and NPR.[13]

Warren has been touring extensively since 2012. She has toured with Mitski,[14] Julie Byrne,[15] Marissa Nadler,[16] and Xasthur.[17] She was an official performer at SXSW in 2017 and 2018.[18] An herbalist and energy healer, in 2018 Warren traveled solo around the US on a "Plant Medicine Tour," partnering with local herbalists and organic farmers in over 65 cities to raise awareness about the healing powers of plants.[19]

In 2019 Warren announced she would be playing the supporting lead in indie feature film "She the Creator," the debut from writer/director Juliette Wallace.

On May 1, 2020 Warren's fifth studio album Chaotic Good was released on Carpark Records/Wax Nine Records. It received praise from Pitchfork, NPR, and Paste Magazine. [20]
