Biography

Binn was born in 1968 to Moreton and Penny Binn[2][6] in Roslyn, New York.[7] He graduated cum laude and early from Boston University's College of Communications in 1986.[8][9][10][11][12]

Binn married Haley Lieberman in December 2003.[6] They have three children[13] and reside in New York City.[4][14][15]

Publishing career

Binn began his publishing career at 23 at the advertising agency, D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles.[1][16][17][18] Upon moving to South Beach, Miami he co-founded Ocean Drive magazine, a luxury publication focusing on Miami, in 1992.[16][17]

In 1998, he founded Niche Media, a publisher of regional luxury magazines including Hamptons Magazine (The Hamptons, Long Island, New York),[19][20]Aspen Peak (Aspen, Colorado), Boston Common (Boston, Mass), Capitol File (Washington, D.C.).,[21] Gotham (New York),[22][23] Los Angeles Confidential, Vegas Magazine (Las Vegas) and Michigan Avenue (Chicago).[17] The firm was acquired by GMG in 2007,[24] for what is believed to be in excess of $100M.[25][24] In 2010, Binn was appointed Chairman of Niche Media Holdings LLC.[26]

In 2010, Binn was the Chief Advisor to Gilt Groupe, an online luxury shopping company[27][28] In January 2016, Gilt was sold to Hudson’s Bay Company for $250 million.[29][30]

In 2012, Binn founded DuJour Media,[31] his first major media launch since he sold Niche Media in 2006.[32] It is intended to connect with affluent readers, on and off line. DuJour partnered with Gilt Groupe to deliver a digital version of the magazine each month to the site's top 3 million customers[33]. Gilt Groupe and its founder Kevin P. Ryan are investors in DuJour.

Since 2016, he has been Executive Director of JetSmarter, Inc.[34]

Awards and recognition

In 2005, Binn was profiled in Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400",[35] and was awarded Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year."[36] In 2007, he was the only media member inducted into the American Advertising Federation's “Advertising Hall of Achievement”.[37] In 2008, he was listed in Crain’s “40 Under 40” list of successful entrepreneurs.[38]

In fall 2012, Crain's New York credited Binn with making print magazines more successful in a time when print is losing market to digital media.[39] He was also recognized by American Advertising Federation.[37] In 2008 he was a recipient of Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Profession for his work in the field of communications and media.[40][41]
