What began as a search for the country's most entertaining acts turns into a hit variety program launching a thousand trends for Filipinos and in abroad. Having its distinct brand of entertainment, It's Showtime thrives on spontaneity and animated conversations. As it keeps on churning out popular catchphrases and gimmicks, the show also draws people from all walks of life to showcase their talents.

It's Showtime is the second live entertainment program in the Philippines to be broadcast in high-definition. The program is currently ABS-CBN's longest-running daily noontime variety show after surpassing the original run of MTB (1998–2005) by 2016.

History

As Showtime!

Showtime premiered on October 24, 2009 at 10:30 am, as a competition program, airing before the network's noontime shows, and served as the replacement of Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba? following its successful 8-year morning run. The original hosts include Vhong Navarro, Anne Curtis, Kuya Kim Atienza, Jugs Jugueta, Teddy Corpuz, and Vice Ganda as the resident "hurado" (unevictable judge). During the third season, the show added former hurados Billy Crawford and Karylle as hosts.

In the first four seasons, Showtime's original competition format was that three groups, each made up of two to twenty-five members (with no age limit), perform a single performance, either a dance and/or song number. Before the performance, one group member is given twenty seconds to make an introduction before ending with the phrase "It's Showtime!". After the group's performance, the hurados and the studio audiences will rate the group from 1 to 10. The group with the highest average scores from the hurados wins the competition. All the winners from Daily will perform to the Weekly Finals; all the winning weekly finalists will advance to the Monthly Finals; and last, the winning monthly finalists will get the chance to compete in the Grand Finals. In the Wildcard Week, the best groups who lost in the weekly and monthly finals will get another chance to compete again in order to win a slot for the Grand Finals. Aside from the talent competition, Showtime also aired quick, short-term segments that offer cash prizes to the studio audiences.

The very first Grand Finals of Showtime was held in July 2010 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Rizal. Forty hurados (including Vice Ganda and Jhong Hilario) were assembled to judge the eleven grand finalists. At the end of the competition, the dance group XB Gensan (from the Wildcard week) emerged as the very first Grand Champion with a final average score of 9.875 pts.

In October 2010, the show was temporarily moved to noontime slot occupying the 11:00 am PHT time slot, while the succeeding program Pilipinas Win na Win followed at 1:30 pm PHT until the latter show was cancelled on December 31, 2010.

Showtime continued to air on the noontime slot in January 2011 until it later returned to its original timeslot on February 12, 2011 to give way for Happy Yipee Yehey!.

On January 28, 2012, Showtime aired a special episode to end its two-year morning competition format with an impartial farewell.[2] It was revealed that the program was preparing for a reformat to become a noontime variety show.[3][4]

As Magpasikat

Magpasikat is the placeholder show of Showtime during the suspension of the latter. The show had essentially the same format as with Showtime, except that the competing groups were composed of celebrities. Magpasikat aired from January 11, 2010 to January 16, 2010.

As It's Showtime

It's Showtime premiered on February 6, 2012 on its new timeslot at 11:30 AM, replacing the defunct noontime program Happy Yipee Yehey!. During the first months of relaunch, the show was also simulcast previously on Studio 23 (now ABS-CBN Sports and Action) and CgeTV's website. It's Showtime retains all of the main hosts, including Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda and Vhong Navarro, while adding former hurados Jhong Hilario, Ryan Bang and Coleen Garcia. Eric "Eruption" Tai was also added as one of the new hosts during the pilot episode.

It's Showtime launched new long-term segments, while the original competition format returned once again as one of its special segments. The competitive format was used for one final season, season five. To cater to the entire family audience, a sixth season called the Bida Kapamilya competition was introduced on April 30, 2012.

In January 2018 the show is extended from 3:30 pm, from Mondays-Fridays and 3:30 pm, from Saturdays after the ratings got affected due to rival network GMA Network's decision since 2017 to air extensively its afternoon drama series on Saturdays right after Eat Bulaga!.

In October 2018, It's Showtime launched its own YouTube channel Showtime Online Universe.[5][6] Three digital programs premiered on the channel: "And I Thank You" with Miss Q and A segment grand winner Juliana Parizcova Segovia; "Hashtag Roadtrip" with the Hashtag members; and "Donna What To Do" with Funny One segment season two grand winner Donna Cariaga. The Showtime Online Universe received a Silver Creator Award after getting 100,000 channel subscribers in January 2019.[7]

Showtime's "Sampu-Sample"

On October 1, 2019, It's Showtime started to celebrate their 10th anniversary by introducing a new anniversary tagline, "Sampu-Sample" (derived from the word "Sampu" (lit. Ten) and "Sample" which has been used as a catchphrase for the show). One of its main hosts, Kuya Kim Atienza rejoined the program, then some favorite Showtime segments returned, including "Classic Showtime" (including its traditional "Hurado O Burado" segment and the trivia before the "Score Mo, Show Mo" held by Kuya Kim), "Sine Mo'To", "AdVice Ganda" , and other throwback segments, in time for their anniversary. Also, they added their "Biyayang Sampu-Sample" which they will give away prizes for one whole year, as their treat for those who have supported the program.

Last October 2, the show announced that their "Magpasikat 2019" and "Classic Showtime Grand Finals" will be held at Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila on October 21–26 as part of their anniversary treat. The Classic Showtime Grand winner will take home five hundred thousand pesos (₱500,000.00), while Magpasikat 2019 Champion will take home one million pesos (₱1,000,000.00) and a vacation package to their chosen charity. The teams and schedule for Magpasikat 2019 were selected on October 2:

  • Tuesday (October 22): Team Anne and Amy (with Bidaman)
  • Wednesday (October 23): Team Karylle and Ryan (with TNT Boys and TNT Singers)
  • Thursday (October 24): Team Jugs, Teddy and Jhong (with Jackie Gonzaga, Ion Perez, Sanrio, Krissha, Joana and Sammie)
  • Friday (October 25): Team Vhong and Mariel (with Hashtags)
  • Saturday (October 26): Team Vice Ganda (solo) (with Miss Q&A Queens)

On October 26, J-Crisis was announced as winner of the "Classic Showtime" grand finals, and Team Blue, headed by Vice Ganda along with Miss Q and A queens were named as the Grand Winner of "Magpasikat 2019".

Holy Week Special

In observance of the Holy Week, It's Showtime airs a series of special drama episodes from Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday. The hosts take a break from their hosting jobs and venture into acting to portray stories of the noontime program's previous contestants, or visit people with inspiring stories. The program began its Holy Week Special in 2013.[18]

Magpasikat

Magpasikat is the annual talent competition for the It's Showtime hosts, held either a week before the show's anniversary date, October 24, or during the week itself. The hosts perform from Monday to Friday, with the awarding of winners on Saturday. The performances are then evaluated by a special panel of hurados (judges).

*Team Jugs and Teddy

Jugs Jugueta and Teddy Corpuz had the studio audience and other hosts dance to their own version of Psy's "Gangnam Style". The duo reworked the lyrics but retained the tune of the song and created "Epal Ang 'Yong Style". Child star Bugoy Cariño and actress Cristine Reyes also joined them in their extremely fun production number.

*Team Billy and Vhong

Billy Crawford and Vhong Navarro performed an extremely futuristic dance number. Their performance showed different forms of illusion with the help of high-technology tricks. The pair also showed off their incomparable skills in dancing while performing an innovative dance with lights.

Season 4 Magpasikat Champions

*Team Karylle, Jugs and Teddy

  • Team Karylle, Jugs and Teddy won Php200,000

Karylle, Jugs Jugueta and Teddy Corpuz surprised everyone with a very mind-boggling production number. They also did anti-gravity aerial dance routines inside the It's Showtime studio. This time, the play focuses on their son's story as it highlights self-acceptance, gender equality, and a mother's unconditional love and care for her child.

Season 10 Magpasikat Champions

*Team Vice

  • Team Vice won Php1 Million

Vice Ganda led his team to victory with a powerful and dazzling performance dedicated to people struggling with alopecia areata, a condition that causes hair to fall out. The 'unkabogable' star, who was accompanied by "Miss Q and A" queens, depicted his "hairstory" (hair history) and journey to self-acceptance with a medley of songs that included Radiohead's "Creep", followed by Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" and Destiny's Child "Survivor", marked by numerous wig and costume changes. The theme of self-love further took centerstage as Vice spun in the air and belted out Lady Gaga's "Hair", then gave the spotlight to a child with alopecia. Various audience members donning wigs also revealed themselves to have alopecia by taking off their wigs, moving the judges and the audience. He then officially introduced Ion Perez as his partner.

Reception

International Version

The show spawned its very first international franchise in Indonesia in 2019, titled It's Showtime Indonesia, which premiered on March 25, 2019 on MNCTV.[45] It's Showtime became ABS-CBN's first non-narrative format to be franchised by another country.[46]

COVID-19 changes

On March 10, 2020, It's Showtime temporarily disallowed live audience from entering It's Showtime studio to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines after local transmission of the coronavirus was confirmed in the Philippines.

On March 16, 2020, It's Showtime temporarily suspended live episodes and aired replays due to the 2020 Luzon enhanced community quarantine put in place to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. However, some episodes are taped live via work from home arrangements.

On April 29, 2020, It's Showtime temporarily shortened its reruns to 1 hour and moved to 1:30 PM as the community quarantine extended further, with Kapamilya Blockbusters extending its run to two movies as part of the temporary programming changes.

Network's franchise renewal controversy

On May 5, 2020, the show suspended its airings due to the closure of its network ABS-CBN because of the cease and desist order of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), following the expiration of the network's 25-year franchise granted in 1995.

On June 13, 2020, the show resumed its taping/live broadcast of new episodes to be broadcast on a new cable-and-satellite channel Kapamilya Channel. A Philippine pay television network owned and operated by ABS-CBN Corporation. It is simulcast on Jeepney TV every Mondays-Saturdays.[47]

Some time in July 2020, the show aired replays.

Ratings

Showtime debuted on its pre-noontime slot on October 24, 2009, with a 14.0% national TV rating based on Kantar Media Philippines.[48] Its immense popularity ended the dominance of talk show SiS on its timeslot.[49] GMA Network replaced SiS with Diz Iz It!, a competition similar to Showtime, but it was cancelled after five months.

Showtime's very first grand finals held in July 2010 received a 35% national TV rating, beating the 8.9% rating of Diz Iz It! and 13.7% of Eat Bulaga![50] The second grand finals held in December 2010 scored a 23.4% national TV rating against Eat Bulaga!'s 17.4%.[51] The third grand finals in May 2011 also delivered a rating of 21.3% versus Eat Bulaga!'s 17%.

It's Showtime debuted on its noontime slot on February 6, 2012 with a 13.6% national rating.[52] The episode received an overall 16.3% rating when the viewership numbers from Studio 23 were added. Initially placing behind Eat Bulaga!, the show's rating peaked to a 20.9% national rating during the finals of the "Bida Kapamilya" segment and its third anniversary week-long celebration.[53][54]

The finals of the Kalokalike segment in June 2013 garnered a 26.8% national TV rating, leaving Eat Bulaga! and Wowowillie with 13.2% and 2.8% ratings, respectively.[55] The finals of the segment's second iteration posted a 21.6% national TV rating, once again beating Eat Bulaga!'s 15.8% and Wowowillie's 2.6%.[56]

It's Showtime continued its dominance in the noontime slot with its fourth anniversary week special held from October 21–26, 2013.[57][58]

The program faced heavy competition in 2015 when the sixth anniversary special only scored a 10.2% national TV rating, four times behind Eat Bulaga!. This is due to the Tamang Panahon special (and the build-up before that), which served as the climax of the then-popular Kalyeserye segment which featured AlDub.[59][60][61]

It's Showtime quickly regained its prominence on its time slot when Tawag ng Tanghalan launched in 2016. The program garnered a 33.6% national TV rating during the singing competition's first grand finals.[62] Tawag ng Tanghalan continued its winning streak during its second-season finale when it posted a national TV rating of 31.0% against Eat Bulaga!'s 9.5%.[63] It's Showtime topped the ratings game once again during the first grand finals of Miss Q and A segment on June 30, 2018 with a national TV rating of 28.4% versus Eat Bulaga!'s 11.1%.[64]

The second Miss Q and A grand finals posted a national TV rating of 27.4%, beating Eat Bulaga!'s 10.6%, Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko's 13.8%, and Tadhana's 11.3%.[65]

Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 3 Grand Finals posted a national TV Rating of 25.8%, beating Eat Bulaga!'s 10.4% and Hanggang Sa Dulo Ng Buhay Ko's 9.5%.

Controversies

MTRCB suspension

Showtime was suspended by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for twenty days. This was due to comments uttered by guest judge Rosanna Roces against certain groups, especially teachers, heard live in January 2010, As a form of self-regulation, ABS-CBN relieved Roces of her jury duty, but a suspension was still served against the show effective January 2010, It returned on February 1. In the meantime, a placeholder show called Magpasikat took over Showtime's timeslot.[66] The show had essentially the same format as with Showtime, except that the competing groups were composed of celebrities.

However, the suspension period lasted for only six days after the Court of Appeals issued a 60-day temporary restraining order against the MTRCB in January 2010, The issuance of the order, and therefore the return of Showtime was announced later on Magpasikat.[67][68][69]

In March 2010, MTRCB ordered a total one-month suspension of the program because of the incident, including the replacement Magpasikat. The MTRCB also directed the filing of criminal charges against Florida Tan, ABS-CBN vice-president for programming, and other officers "responsible for the violation".[70] Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN's Corporate Communications said that the suspension was not yet final and that they were seeking appeal before the Office of the President.[71] However, the variety show won the case because the MTRCB had not presented new arguments that would justify a reversal of its previous resolution.[72][73]

"Pastillas Girl" controversy

"Nasaan Ka Mr. Pastillas?" was a daily reality-dating game serial which drew the ire of netizens and the women's group Gabriela. Because of various complaints from online social networking sites, MTRCB summoned the show's executives to discuss the segment. After a thorough investigation, MTRCB imposed "self-regulation" on It's Showtime because of the segment.

Magpasikat controversies

The show's annual Magpasikat finals has gained many controversies on It's Showtime. Here are three examples:

1. Maricel Soriano's low score for Team Anne, Ryan, and Nadine for Magpasikat 2017 sparked the netizens' reactions. The actress gave the team a "6" score.[74]

2. Couple Ronnie and Mariz Ricketts gave a "7" score for Magpasikat 2018 winning team, Team JhongRylle. The netizens were disappointed about the result, while some made fun of it.[75][76]

3. Rachel Arenas gave a 7.5 score to team Karylle and Ryan for the recently concluded Magpasikat 2019, many K-Pop fans were dismayed of the result.[77]
