International Tree Foundation

International Tree Foundation (ITF) is a charitable tree-planting organisation established in 1924.[1] It is working in various countries in Africa and also in the UK.[2]

History

ITF was founded in 1924 by Dr. Richard ‘St. Barbe’ Baker. Following his pioneering work in Kenya creating Watu wa Mitu (People of the Trees) with Chief Josiah Njonjo, he returned to the UK with the goal, incredibly forward-thinking for its time, of spreading the word about the benefits of reforestation around the world. He called the charity Men of the Trees, and succeeded in expanding to include members in over 100 countries at one point.

In 1992, Men of the Trees was renamed the International Tree Foundation, and it has continued to work around the world in local communities on a variety of projects centred around reforestation, environmental protection and community-building.[3]

ITF has worked for more than 80 years, supporting community forestry projects in the UK and worldwide, and has been responsible for the establishment of an estimated 27 billion trees.[4]
