The company's shipyard is twenty five years old and is located on reclaimed land just outside the historic port of Harlingen, with unrestricted open-water access from locks and bridges. The facilities include a huge covered and heated dry dock with space for vessels up to 150 meters of length and 7.5 meters drafts. The shipyard also features a 4.500 ton syncrolift, with new construction and refit projects benefitting from having their co-makers on site at the shipyard.[1]

In 2009, Lloyd's Register awarded ICON Yachts with the ISO 9001:2008 certificate for its quality management systems, making it one of world's first ever shipyards to receive the recognition.[2]

History

ICON Yachts was founded in late 2005 by Ton Van Dam and Alex Shnaider. The founders were shortly after joined by business partners, including the company's current chief executive officer Jen Wartena, who helped further the shipyard's growth.

In 2013, ICON Yachts was featured in a six-part series called SuperYachts on Discovery Channel, a televised programme that followed some of Dutch top businesses and yards in action "to document the workmanship and technology that lies behind the finished product of superyachts."[3]

In early 2014, the company was bought out of bankruptcy by Russian banker Alexander Mazanov.[4] Alexander Shnaider exited the company. Ton Van Dam and Jen Wartena remained as integral people in the transition.[5]

ICON Yachts' first build, the motor yacht ICON, underwent a significant transformation in 2014. Extended by five meters, to 68 meters, in only six months, the luxury yacht was refitted with an infinity swimming pool, a six-person sauna, an expanded gym and a dive store, along with a number of technical upgrades.[6] Her new look was shown in a video shoot during the Monaco Yacht Show the same year.[7]

In April 2015, the Dutch shipyard announced the order of the biggest construction project in the company's history so far. The award-winning yacht designer Tim Heywood is responsible for its exterior lines, which has been designed to include a helicopter landing pad on the foredeck and a beach club with a large bathing platform. Scheduled to be completed in 2017, the luxury yacht's full length has not yet been disclosed, but it is reported to be above 80 meters.[8]
