Early life

Pak was born in Dallas, Texas to a Korean-American father and a Caucasian mother. He graduated from Hillcrest High School. He studied political science at Yale University, where he wrote for the campus humor magazine, The Yale Record,[2][3] and was a member of the Purple Crayon improvisational group. In 1991 he went to study history at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar with the intent of becoming a politician. He then entered New York University's graduate film program.[2][4][5][6]

Career

His New York University (NYU) student film, Fighting Grandpa, about his Korean grandparents, won the Gold Medal at the 25th Student Academy Awards. His short film "Asian Pride Porn", starring playwright David Henry Hwang and director Michael Kang, was licensed to Atom Films. Pak wrote and directed the feature film Robot Stories. He collected his screenplays in the book Robot Stories & More Screenplays, whose foreword was written by David Henry Hwang.

Pak began writing for Marvel Comics in September 2004 and signed an exclusive deal with them in July 2005.[7] He has worked on such titles as Warlock,[8] Phoenix: Endsong,[9] Phoenix: Warsong,[10] Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Dynamite Entertainment's spin-off series based on the Sci-Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica.

His 2000s projects include Incredible Hercules,[11][12][13] World War Hulk: Warbound and Skaar: Son of Hulk,[14] all spinning-off from World War Hulk, as well as Magneto: Testament[15] and War Machine.[16][17][18] Pak is one of the featured contributors to Secret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology.[19]

In June 2013, Pak began writing Batman/Superman for DC Comics.[1] In November 2013, he began writing Action Comics with issue number 25.[20]

In 2020, Pak will release two original graphic novels based on the web series Stranger Things. The first book, titled Zombie Boys, was released on February 19, 2020. The novel, drawn by Valeria Favoccia, lettered by Nate Piekos of Blambot, colored by Dan Jackson, and cover art provided by Ron Chan, was a total of 72 pages long and saw Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin serve as the cast of a home movie being filmed by a new student.[21] A second novel, featuring the same group and format and titled The Bully, currently has a release date of September 1, 2020. The novel involves Troy and James, two bullies from the show's first season, as they try to find the secret behind Eleven's mysterious powers but run into demogorgons in the process.[22]
