Gewitter im Kopf – Leben mit Tourette (English: Thunderstorms in your head - life with Tourettes) is a Youtube channel run by Jan Zimmermann and Tim Lehmann that deals with the clinical picture of Tourette syndrome. Tim Lehmann is not affected by Tourette syndrome, but is in front of the camera in most videos with Jan Zimmermann.

Channel

After the first video was uploaded on February 21, 2019, the channel had already reached one million subscribers [1] on May 10, 2019. Jan Zimmermann gained fame through a report by Galileo.[2] The channel became known to a broader audience through reaction videos by the Youtubers Simon Unge and MontanaBlack.

Lehmann and Zimmermann have also had a second channel called Gewitter im Stream (en.: Thunderstorm in Stream) on February 19, 2020, in which highlights are uploaded to YouTube from the weekly live streams they host. As of May 27, 2020, the channel has more than 95,000 subscribers.[3][4]

In the format Alltag mit Tourette (en.:"Everyday with Tourette), the effects of Tourette syndrome on everyday situations are described in a kind of video blog. In these videos, visits to the hairdresser or the zoo are filmed, for example, and the difficulties in these situations are shown and explained. In this context, they also produce cooking and baking videos. They always answer comments from viewers in extra videos. There are also other videos that explain uncomfortable or funny situations that have arisen as a result of tics. Videos are also uploaded with other victims or attending doctors. On December 24, 2019, they released the song Show Your Face. The song has reached (as of June 11, 2020) over 3 million views. On June 12, 2020, a new single called Krieger (en.: Warrior) followed. Name

According to their own statements, the name Gewitter im Kopf (Thunderstorm in Head) came from an inspiration from a former lecturer from Jan Zimmermann. The lecturer compared his Tourette and epilepsy-related symptoms to a thunderstorm.

Goals

Tourette sufferers can be exposed to uncomfortable situations in everyday life due to motoric and vocalic tics. The goal of Gewitter im Kopf (Thunderstorm in Head) is to make the disease known and thereby relieve the outsiders of their fear of contact. They clearly emphasize that not everyone affected shares a humorous approach to Tourette syndrome.[5]

Reactions

In addition to many positive reactions, both of them experience critical voices again and again. So they are accused that the tics are only played, or an exorcism is recommended.[5]

There are also fears that the disease will be ridiculed. Tourette sufferers should not be used to amuse outsiders.[6] Also the Betroffenenorganisationen Tourette-Gesellschaft Deutschland e.V. and the Interessenverband Tic & Tourette Syndrom e.V. also made critical comments in a joint statement.[7] The critical view was confirmed by the IVTS e.V. in an update of July 4, 2019.

Disease

Zimmermann has had Tourette syndrome since childhood. The current form, including coprolalia, first developed from the age of 18.[8] He also has epilepsy.[9] He named his Tourette syndrome "Gisela" to make it clear that what he said was not his own opinion.[5]
