Gary Wight

Commander Gary William Wight, AM RAN was born 21 September 1968 in Liverpool, Australia. He joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in January 1987, ultimately serving as the RAN's 8th Warrant Officer of the Navy (2016-2019) prior to his commission to the rank of Commander in January 2020.[1]

Wight's early military service was as a Radio Operator and Supervisor in various Oberon and Collins Class Submarines. Three years after being promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer (2009) he transitioned to the surface Fleet and served as the Ship's Warrant Officer HMAS Darwin, Command Warrant Officer Navy Career Management and the Command Warrant Officer of Joint Task Force 633.[2] . His career as a non-commissioned Officer culminated in his appointment as the 8th Warrant Officer of the Navy (WON). On completion of service as WON, Wight was commissioned to the rank of Commander and continues to serve.


Wight's operational service includes Special Operations Submarines, Operation Manitou and short deployments on Operation Okra and Operation Highroad. Wight was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his "exceptional service to the Royal Australian Navy in the field of Navy People leadership and management."[3]. He holds a Master of Business Management from the University of New South Wales[1], is married, has four children and resides in Canberra.
