Flo Milli

Tamia Monique Carter[1] (born January 9, 2000),[2] known professionally as Flo Milli, is an American rapper and songwriter. She is best known for her 2019 singles, "Beef FloMix" and "In The Party" which went viral on social media platforms such as TikTok.[3] She signed to RCA Records in early 2020, where she released her debut mixtape, titled Ho, Why Is You Here?, on July 24, 2020.[4]

Early life

Tamia Monique Carter[4] was born on January 9, 2000 in Mobile, Alabama, where she was also raised.[1] She began rapping at age 11, in middle school, forming rap group Real & Beautiful, later known as Pink Mafia.[5] After watching an episode of BET's music video countdown show 106 & Park that featured Nicki Minaj, she was inspired and began writing short verses that grew into songs.[6] She released her first solo song, "No Hook", in 2015.[6] She grew up listening to Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton and Erykah Badu.[7][6]

Career

2019–present: Breakthrough and Ho, Why Is You Here?

In October 2018, Carter recorded the original version of her breakout single, "Beef FloMix", which is a freestyle over the instrumental of Playboi Carti and Ethereal's track "Beef".[6] It went viral on Instagram and other social media sites, including TikTok,[8] where it spawned a number of memes and where users posted tens of thousands of videos to it. It reached number two on Spotify's Viral 50 in April 2019.[9][10] A fully produced version, released in July 2019, received over 46 million streams on Spotify in one year without any label promotion.[11] Carter's follow-up single was "In the Party," released in October 2019.[12] In its first five months it netted over 24 million Spotify plays, along with over 11 million on YouTube, with co-signs by Cardi B[5] and others. In February 2020, she released the single "My Attitude".[13] Allison Stubblebine of Nylon featured the track, praising the song for its "energy".[14] Flo Milli followed "My Attitude" up with the singles "Not Friendly" and "Eat It Up" in March and April 2020 respectively.[15][16] In June 2020, Flo Milli released the J. White Did It-produced single "Like That Bitch". The video was released in July 2020, alongside another new track "Weak".[17][18] Flo Milli's "critically-acclaimed"[11] debut mixtape titled, Ho, Why Is You Here?, was released on July 24, 2020.[19][20]

On August 10, 2020, it was announced that Flo Milli had signed an exclusive global co-publishing deal with Pulse Music. The company described the deal, which encompasses her entire catalog, as "a highly competitive signing situation".[21]

Critical reception

Jon Caramanica of The New York Times described Flo Milli as a "clever, cheerful lyricist" and her 2020 single "My Attitude" a "persistently tough blend of aw-shucks sexual candor and eye-rolling dismissals".[22] Jessica McKinney of Complex wrote, "The Mobile, Alabama rapper’s bubbly, intoxicating delivery defies regional sounds, making her a versatile artist whose music can travel well beyond her hometown. She’s a star."[8]
