Eugène Lepoittevin

Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870) was a French landscape painter, lithographer and caricaturist. He was appointed as Peintre de la Marine for the French Ministry of Defence in 1849. His work is exhibited in many museums in France and at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Early life

Eugène Lepoittevin was born as Eugène Modeste Edmond Poidevin on 31 July 1806 in Paris, France.[1][2] His cousin was not Guy de Maupassant as many writers confused them.[3], Guy de Maupassant cousin was Louis Lepoittevin, a landscape painter namesake. He was trained as a painter by Louis Hersent and Xavier Leprince.[1][2]

Lepoittevin became a painter, lithographer and caricaturist.[1] Some of his drawings were published in La Caricature.[1] He did many landscape paintings of Étretat in Normandy.[1] For example, Empress Eugénie de Montijo, the wife of Emperor Napoleon III, acquired his Les bains de mer à Entretat.[4]

Lepoittevin exhibited his work at the Salon in Paris from 1831 onwards.[2] He was appointed as Peintre de la Marine in 1849.[1]

Death and legacy

Lepoittevin died on 6 August 1870 in Paris, France.[1]

His works are exhibited at the Maison de Balzac and the Hôtel de Brienne (home to the Ministry of Defence) in Paris, the Palace of Versailles and the Musée Lambinet in Versailles, the Château de Dieppe, the Musée de la Faïence et des Beaux-Arts in Nevers, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, the Musée Magnin in Dijon, the Musée des beaux-arts in Troyes, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, the Musée des beaux-arts in Marseille, the Musée des beaux-arts in Chambéry, the Musée Sarret de Grozon in Arbois, the Musée maritime de l'île Tatihou in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, the museum in Soissons,[5] and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.[2]
