Elisabeth Murdoch College

Elisabeth Murdoch College (EMC) (formerly Langwarrin Post Primary School (1984-1986), Langwarrin Secondary College (1987-2004)) is a government-run state high school located in Melbourne's south-eastern suburb of Langwarrin. Langwarrin is found within one of the city's growth corridors, and has seen the college grow over recent years to an enrolment of students. This trend is expected to continue with a forecast student population of students. The College offers a broad range of curriculum areas for students in the secondary years of education. The college offers students a diverse post compulsory education program which incorporates VCE, VCAL and VET. The college is an RTO which offers certificate courses including:

  • Certificate II in Sport and Recreation
  • Certificate III in Concept Development for Clothing Products
  • Certificate III in Information Technology
  • Certificate III in Multimedia.

The college has a long history of student pathway development, with students accessing University, TAFE, apprenticeship programs and work options.

Improvements to the college have taken place over the last five years, including new facilities to cater for the growing needs of young people with a basketball stadium, gym, performing arts centre–auditorium, computer rooms, specialised media labs for video editing and game creation plus music rooms.

Activities

The college extra-curricula program includes performing arts, agriculture and debating programs. Past musical productions have included Fame, Little Shop of Horrors and Bye Bye Birdie. In 2007 The Wizard of Oz was produced, and in 2008 Grease was produced. In 2009 Jesus Christ Superstar was produced, and in 2010 Oklahoma! was produced.

Elisabeth Murdoch College has recently been provided the "Building Futures" funding for infrastructure development, phase one of this development will see the addition of a new senior school building. This facility will complement the work done over the past five years which has seen the improvement of the facilities in the areas of:

Community

The college also has a full-time community youth worker on campus. This position is partly funded by Gateway Church, who met at the Performing Arts Centre on weekends until March 2008. Gateway Church and Elisabeth Murdoch College combined to perform the Bye Bye Birdie theatre production in 2005.
