Early life and education

Emami was born and raised in Iran. After graduating from high school, she moved to Canada in 2002 to pursue her MSc in prosthodontic rehabilitation followed by her PhD in biomedical science at the Université de Montréal and McGill University (joint program).[1] She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in dental public health at McGill University and in Cancer Epidemiology at Université de Montréal. [2]

Career

In 2009, Emami was a visiting professor at the University of McGill's Division of Oral Health & Society under supervisor Christophe Bedos.[3] During this time, she co-authored with Jocelyne Feine a study titled Impact of implant support for mandibular dentures on satisfaction, oral and general health‐related quality of life: a meta‐analysis of randomized‐controlled trials.[4] She eventually joined the faculty at McGill University Faculty of Dentistry in 2011 as an Adjunct Professor.[1] The following year, she co-led a study with Igor Karp to study the link between oral health and colorectal cancer. They found that people with little to no teeth were more at risk to colorectal cancer.[5]

In 2015, Emami received the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) clinician‐scientist salary award to co-publish A 30‐Year Follow‐Up of Partial Removable Dental Prostheses in a University Dental School Setting.[6] She also began her multi-year research project titled Fostering Oral Health Through Interdisciplinary Research: Intervention, Access and Impact with funding from the CIHR. The project's aim was to examine how to grant greater access to dental care by testing prosthetic treatments, addressing social and geographical barriers to receiving treatment, and studying how poor oral health can affect people's general health.[7]

Emami has sat on various editorial boards for dentistry journals, including the Journal of Dental Research, Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, and Trials.[8] In 2018, Emami became the Dean of McGill University's Faculty of Dentistry for a five year term[9] and appointed to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Advisory Board.[10] The following year, she was elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences[11] and Académie dentaire du Québec.[12]

She was appointed Dean of the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry in 2018, taking over from Paul Allison. [13]
