ECx

ECx (EuroCityX) is the working title for an intercity train which is being built by the Spanish company Patentes Talgo for German DB Fernverkehr and is scheduled to commence operation from 2023. The manufacturer refers to the train units themselves as Talgo 230.[1][2][3][4] They will replace old Intercity trains.[5]

Order

In November 2015, it was announced in a press release that Deutsche Bahn was planning to procure long-distance coaches for double-decker trains in addition to the up to 160 km / h fast Intercity 2 double-decker trains. These were intended for use on international routes and for operation on non-electrified lines. Preliminary inquiries to possible manufacturers had already been made at that time. The related call for tenders for a framework contract was published on 2 March 2017.[6]

In February 2019, Deutsche Bahn signed a framework agreement with Spanish manufacturer Patentes Talgo. The DB board around Richard Lutz chose the best offer according to the company. The Handelsblatt, however, reported that Patentes Talgo was the only bidder. The framework contract includes the delivery of up to 100 trains. In a first call 23 trains were ordered by 2025. The total cost should amount to around 550 million euros. With about 24 million euros, the train is thus much cheaper than an ICE.[7]

In mid-March 2019, the new train was presented to the public under the working title ECx. The 235 m long articulated train consists of 17 wagons, which are connected at the ends to the neighboring wagon with independent wheel bogies. Only the end cars are on a bogie, so the train has 20 axles, plus the four axles of the 19.5 meter long multi-system-electric locomotive of the type Talgo Travca. With the single-wheel design, the 425-ton Talgo is lighter than the shorter seven-piece ICE 4. In addition, the floor height and passage height is up to the end car areas 76 centimeters and thus allows a height equal transition to the platform. Wheelchair users can get on and off independently.

In the future, according to the Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure all tenders for new vehicles in long-distance passenger transport, the above entry and passage requirements (76 centimeters floor height, continuous passage) have. [8]

Train formation and equipment

The ECx train sets are equipped with a maximum speed of 230 km/h and have 17 passenger coaches. Instead of the supplied Talgo locomotive, a diesel locomotive or another electric locomotive may haul. [9] The cars will be connected via the Talgo standard single-axis drive, which means they will typically be short because of the axle load in the car body Talgo-typical.[10][11][12][13]

The train has three wheelchair seats, eight bicycle racks, a separate toddler area and family area with play area.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the trains should be equipped with WLAN, onboard entertainment (ICE portal), numerous passenger information system s with real-time data and plenty of luggage space. The train is stairless, meeting that its entrance is at the same height as the platform. This is ensured by a continuous floor height of 76 centimeters above top of rail [14] according to European platform height. The train will thus be accessible for disabled people in both Germany and the Netherlands.

The ECx trains are all to receive dining cars according to DB standard.[15]

Operation

Planned bets

According to information from the Deutsche Bahn, the trains will gradually from the timetable change 2023/24 on the route Berlin - Amsterdam and from the subsequent timetable change in the summer of 2024 on the tourist connections between Berlin, Cologne, Karlsruhe and Westerland, Germany are used. [16] On the track between Berlin and Amsterdam, the journey time of the InterCity trains should be shortened by 30 minutes.
