History

The band was established in 1964 by Captain John Deuchar and Roy Smith, who was the first Pipe Major.[1][2] The band has competed at every level within the contest structure of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, reaching Grade 1 in 1989 and 2012.[1][3]

In recent times, David Clunie and Arthur Cook were appointed in 2010 to the roles of Pipe Major and Drum Sergeant respectively.[4]. Clunie and Cook having had extensive premier grade experience brought the band from the brink after the departure of previous P/m Mark Sutherland and within a relatively quick 2 year period having won the European, Cowal and World championship titles in 2012 the band once again made a return to Grade 1 for the 2013 season for a further 3 consecutive years.

At the end of the 2016 season Cook decide to move on and the drum corp members drifted to other bands subsequently the gd1 band struggled to replace the drum corp ending in the band taking a years hiatus until 2018 where by a new drum corp led by Simon Grant secured by Clunie allowed a further return to gd1 for the 2018 season. However it was a difficult return to gd1 with a new corp and the band made a return to gd2 following below par results to maintain gd1 status.

Both Clunie and Grant initially continued with the band into gd2 but due to depleting membership and continuing internal committee disagreements decided to call it quits and resign.

The organisation only has one band now, in Grade 3B. Led by Pipe Major Craig Whyte.

Results

When in Grade 3A, the band took first place in the 2006 World Pipe Band Championships[5] at Glasgow Green, and won the annual Champion of Champions for 3A.[6] This resulted in promotion to Grade 2 for 2007. Since then, the band placed 2nd at the 2011 World Championships, winning the prize for best drum corps.[7] In 2012, success continued, with 2nd places at both the Scottish and British Championships, and 1st places at the European, Cowal and World Championships taking champion of champions title 2012 and securing promotion to Grade 1. In 2012, the drum corps placed 1st at the Scottish, British and European Championships. [8] In 2017 the “wee band “ then grade 4A band achieved top 6 places in 4 out of 5 major championships including becoming British Champions and 4th at the World Championships which secured promotion to Grade 3B for the 2018 season.
