David Check

David Check is a television producer with over three decades of experience in premium programming. He has amassed over 25 Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award.[1][2][3] After working as Executive Producer of MLB Productions for 17 years, he now runs his own company, Check Point Productions.[4] Notably, Check served as Executive Producer on two 30 For 30 films: Four Days in October, and the critically acclaimed Brothers in Exile, which was named the best sports documentary of the year by Sports Illustrated in 2014.[5] Check also played significant roles in two of the top-selling sports home videos of all-time: Michael Jordan: Come Fly With Me, (1989: Writer/Associate Producer) and Faith Rewarded: The Story of the 2004 Boston Red Sox, (Executive Producer).[6][7]

After starting his career at NBA Entertainment in 1987, Check joined MLB Productions in 1998. He supervised over 70 hours of premium award-winning original programming annually, directing editorial and mentoring over 40 staffers. In addition, Check played a vital role in creating new programming opportunities. He was instrumental in adding high-profile partners to the roster of MLB Productions' clients including ESPN, HBO, and FOX. In 2011, Check launched and led the production of the Showtime series, The Franchise, that won a National Sports Emmy for Best Edited Series.[8][9] At the same time, he helped steward Derek Jeter 3k, a co-production between MLB and HBO which chronicled the Yankee Captain's memorable journey to 3000 hits.[10]

In March 2015, Check started Check Point Productions. Soon after, Check worked with Showtime Sports as Executive Producer/Writer of A Season with Notre Dame Football, a documentary series that featured 13 episodes over the course of 14 weeks.[11] He returned in 2016 (Florida State) and 2017 (Naval Academy), working on all facets of production.[12][13]

Starting in 2018, Check served as the showrunner for Action, a gambling series on Showtime that premiered in March 2019.[14] Simultaneously, Check has expanded beyond the sports storytelling space, teaming up with acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh to serve as Executive Producer/Show-runner for a five-part series on military justice.[15] Leavenworth premiered on Starz in October 2019.[16]

Born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Check went to Bronx Science High School and graduated from Vassar College, where he was the number one singles player on the varsity tennis team for all four years.[17]
