Early life

Damodar Mall is a Business Graduate from IIM, Bangalore and an Engineer from IIT Bombay.[3] He won a marketing gold, at his business school.

His earlier career was at Hindustan Unilever, in the brand management function.[4]

Retail journey

Damodar promoted a supermarket chain with R.K. Damani in 1999–2000.[5] The venture went on to become a 60 store D-Mart chain in western India. He headed the first phone order supermarket, Sangam Direct for Unilever in 2003.

In Future Group Damodar was involved in shaping Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, to scale and creation of the backend value chain for the food business. He also led the creation of retail concepts Foodhall, KB's Fair Price, Ethnicity and several private brands at the group.[6]

Publications

With a foreword from Mukesh Ambani and preface by Kishore Biyani, Damodar Mall's first book, SuperMarketWala – Secrets to Winning Consumer India, was launched on 17 September at the India Retail Forum 2014. Drawing inspiration from Paco Underhill, Mall's book talks about observations and experiences in the retail sector. A collectivization of Mall's blog at Forbes, the book has become the focal point of the launch of the retail know-how brand, SuperMarketWala.[7]

Excerpt: "If you leave a space measuring more than your forearm – from the tip of your finger to your elbow – between you and the person just ahead of you in a queue, in India, such a gap is not feasible to sustain. It shall get bridged or occupied within five minutes." – The Elbow Push Factor, SuperMarketWala

Shopkeeper-in-Law: This term is introduced by Damodar which represents the scenario for a newly married woman when she visits a nearby grocery shop from where her in-laws used to buy their goods. The shopkeeper is having a good relations with her family and he is aware of all the products as well as their brands which her family uses. If the daughter-in-law asks for a new band which her family haven't tried before than the shopkeeper will start judging her and will indirectly become a shopkeeper-in-law.

Damodar continues to write an invitation blog "Shopkeeper-In-Law" for Forbes India.[8] He has written columns for the Economic Times, DNA,[9] and the Times of India. He was profiled by Mint, a business daily in 2007.[10]

Damodar was a member of Coca-Cola Retail Research Committee of Asia from 2006–2009.[11] He is the recipient of the Golden Spoon Award for the most admired Food & Grocery retail professional of the year, in 2011.[12]
