History

Originally Durham County Council was based at the Shire Hall in Durham.[1] When this became too small for the County Council's requirements, a new building, which was designed by Sir Basil Spence,[2] was built at a cost of £2.75 million and officially opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in October 1963.[3] The County Council is scheduled to move to a smaller facility on the Sands car park at Freeman's Place in the centre of Durham in late 2021.[4] The County Council also intends to move the county archives to a new history centre at Mount Oswald.[5]
