History

The building, which was designed in the Gothic style, was built as the county gaol and completed in 1869.[1] Located to the north of the old County Hall, the site incorporates a tower that once formed part of the town walls. The building closed as a prison in 1921 and was subsequently converted to create offices for Caernarvonshire County Council.[2] After the implementation of the Local Government Act 1972, the offices, by then known as the "County Offices", became the headquarters of Gwynedd County Council in 1974.[3] On 1 April 1996, under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, Gwynedd Council became the local authority in the area and took over the offices.[4] Additional facilities have been built on the east side of Shirehall Street.[4]
