Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Johnston played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Red Deer Rebels, and Regina Pats before turning professional for the 1995–96 ECHL season.

Johnston was selected to represent the Austin Ice Bats at the 1998–99 Western Professional Hockey League all-star game.[1]
