Since 1974, an area encompassing 1,189 km2 around the city has been designated as the Chennai metropolitan area (CMA), and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has been assigned to plan the growth of the city and the area it surrounds.

Profile

Chennai (also known by its colonial name of Madras), is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, and the fourth largest metropolis in India. The Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) comprises the city of Chennai, 16 Municipalities, 20 town Panchayats, 214 Village Panchayats, and 10 Panchayat Unions. The CMA spans 1189 km2 and is divided into three districts: Tamil Nadu State viz. Chennai District, Thiruvallur District from Tiruvettriyur to Ponnamalle taluk, and Kancheepuram District from Pallavaram to Vandalur.

- The North Side covers up to Athipattu, Minjur.

- The North West side cover up to Avadi, Pattabiram and Thiruninravur area and then covers up to areas like Poonamalle Nazarathpet and Nalur, from Poonnamalle taluk. Redhills Karanodai.

- The West side covers Pallavaram taluk (subdivision) region Mangadu and Kundrathur. Then Sriperumbudur taluk region up to Varadharajapuram.

- The East side covers Uthandi and Kunathur.

- The South side covers up to Chengalpattu taluk regions like Mannivakkam kandigai, mambakkam and Vandalur.

Regions within Chennai city limits will be given CMDA approval for lands and building construction, hile DTCP approval will be given to towns outside Chennai like Kanchipuram region places like Urapakkam, Guduvancheri, Potheri and other Chengalpattu taluka regions.

The Chennai city pin codes range from 600001 to 600130, with a few exceptions such as Thirunindravur with pincode 602024 . Areas in other pin codes may refer to themselves as Chennai but are not officially recognized as such.
